The historic spa city

Greeting

Everybody is welcomed in Gyula. Enjoy yourselves and come back later!

Greeting

Dr. Klára PerjésiThe almost 800-year old Gyula town is located in the south-eastern region of Hungary, in the gate of Transylvania. It is an important border crossing along the Romanian border with county-level and regional institutions, as well as, it is a settlement of multi-nationality and multi-religion, where the inhabitants always lived together in peace.

Our historical traditions, intellectual and built heritage radiate calmness and beauty. Gyula town?s symbol is the 600-year old brick-masonry fortress, in which a renaissance castle museum awaits the visitors. The totally reconstructed inner-town of Gyula has been enriched with new street and square pavements, fountains, garden seats and street lamps in addition to the Anamorphosis statue (based on Albrecht Dürer?s Adam and Eva engraving) and the World Clock.

Our thermal water of curative power is a treasure. Every year one million people enjoy its beneficial effect in the most beautiful thermal bath of Hungary, the Castle Bath of Gyula. The Castle Theatre of Gyula ? one of the most prestigious summer theatres of Hungary ? has a history of almost half-century.

Further colourful programs await the visitors: cultural events, festivals, programs for children and adults. Following our traditions and introducing new attractions (such as the Renaissance Carnival of Gyula) is the guarantee of our success.

I do hope that browsing of this brochure will arouse your interest against Gyula, and you will visit our town, participate on our programs and get acquainted with our values.

Everybody is welcomed in Gyula. Enjoy yourselves and come back later!

Dr. Klára Perjési

         Mayor

Geographical location

Gyula town lies on the south-eastern part of the Hungarian Great Plain, in the vicinity of Transylvania, on the left bank of Fehér (White) Körös River and at the elevation of 87-88 m. Similar to the whole of the Great Plain, a moderate, continental climate has formed also in Gyula. The natural rivers near to the town, the Körös Rivers are the rivers of the cleanest water in Europe.

Border crossing

Romania became an EU member state on 1 January 2007, which made possible the simplification of administration also at the border station of Gyula. It enabled us to visit the neighbouring country?s towns with any fundamental personal paper (identity card, passport). The frontier control continues in existence, since Romania does not belong to the Schengen countries.

Population

In Gyula of 32 000 inhabitants, people of Hungarian, German and Romanian nationalities have been living together in peacefulness for long decades.

To whom we are proud of

During its three-quarters thousand years old history, Gyula town had many noted personalities.

Albrecht Dürer: Father of Albrech Dürer emigrated from Gyula, from Ajtósfalva to settle down in Nuremberg during his master trip in Europe.

Zoltán Bay: Physicist Zoltán Bay is the son of the town, who lived here until his age of 11. He ?touched? the Moon first, since he prepared the electron accelerator, the most important tool of nuclear physics.

Imre Bródy: Physicist Imre Bródy, the inventor of krypton lamp came into the world also in Gyula.

Ferenc Erkel: Creator of the Hungarian national opera, Ferenc Erkel, who set the Hungarian national anthem to music, was born in Gyula.

György Pomucz: The ?honvéd? captain of the 1848/49 Revolution and War of Independence, György Pomucz born in Gyula became the general of the North American Civil War.

Tradition and Quality

2008 is a triple anniversary!

1868 ? 2008: The meat trade of Gyula is 140 years old

The Gyulai Húskombinát Zrt. (Meat Combine of Gyula Plc) is one of the biggest meat processing companies in Hungary. 1868 is reckoned as its year of establishment, when the first slaughterhouse of Gyula was opened. Noted pork butcher and sausage-maker dynasties of the town brought the firm?s name into repute. Also among them, András Stéberl born in Pozsony (Bratislava) local master butcher stands pre-eminent, who founded an industrial unit at the beginning of the 1930s. He based the plant?s development on capturing the market of Budapest in the first place, and then later on he also transacted significant export activities. Creating world reputation of ?Gyulai? Sausage is linked with his name. This product won golden diploma at the World Expo (Exposition universelle et internationale) of 1935 in Brussels.

1968 ? 2008: The ?Csabai? Sausage of Gyula is 40 years old

In addition to the traditional Gyulai dry sausage in pair made with sweet paprika, production of Csabai Sausage seasoned with hot paprika was stated just 40 years ago. The Csabai Sausage - and of course the Gyulai Sausage - is a Hungaricum having geographical origin protection, which are first-rate dry-sausages being made from Hungarian raw materials.

1978 ? 2008: The Meat Combine of Gyula is 30 years old

The Meat Combine of Gyula, as a complex large-scale industrial plant commenced its operation in 1978. Within the industry, it was realised first here, that beside the slaughterhouse also a by-product processing plant was built. The company?s international certificates serve as a guarantee to the partners concerning the products? permanent choice quality. Putting the main stress on the products of long standing ? Gyulai Sausage, Csabai Sausage, Paraszt (Farmer) Sausage or Gyulai liver paste being a general favourite ? they strive for courting the costumers? favour with new developments.

History of Gyula Fortress

From the construction to its surrender for the Turks, Gyula Fortress can be linked significantly with the royal court either by relation right or by the way that the King himself or a member of royal family was the proprietor of the big manor. All this is worth of emphasizing since Buda and Vajdahunyad are the nearest two castles unequivocally having this kind of royal position. Compared to the latter, Gyula Fortress may be even more highlighted, since it can be connected also with foreign monarchical circles.

The first factual mention of the fortress building is from 1445, although János Maróti began with its construction already in 1405. His life passed in uninterrupted fighting against the Turks, therefore the leader and terminator of the works in Gyula could be his son, László Maróti. In 1476, the fortress and the huge manor reverted to the crown. In 1482 King Matthias gave the territory to his son, János Corvinus (John Corvin), who made his mark on the fortress ? in addition to other building operations ? by erecting the present Corvin-bastion (so called ?Rondella? round bastion). From strategic point of view, the fortress advanced in fact after the Mohács Disaster. The adherents of János Szapolyai succeeded to seize it, and then for a short while it was in the hands of noblemen of Transylvanian interestedness. However, in 1552 it got again into king?s ownership in consequence of to an exchange. In the meanwhile, the Ottomans engaged in the destruction of the surroundings. Then they built palisades not far off from the fortress herewith hindering the food supply for the defenders. In summer of 1566, Pertaf pasha, nephew of Suleiman II (Suleiman the Magnificent) finally laid siege to the fortress. After a nine-week siege, they subscribed the fortress? capitulation agreement, thus the town fell into the Turks? hands. With the onset of a relative peace, the life of the city began to develop slowly, and then in 1695 the Christian troops reoccupied the territory. Thereafter the estate?s ancillary units were placed in the castle.

The renovation of the fortress was started in the beginning of the 1960s. The Castle Theatre has operated within the walls since 1960, and the old permanent exhibition was opened also at this time. Following a long-standing renovation, the new Renaissance Castle Museum was finished in 2005, in which the visitors can go through the history of six centuries in 24 exhibition rooms.

Castle Museum

Gyula Fortress being the only flatland, Gothic brick-masonry fortress of Central-Europe remained intact stands at the persons? service showing an interest, with 24 exhibition rooms.

The visitor can have a look at, how our ancestors settled in as a lord of the castle, how they lived their weekdays as a lady of the castle, in what a Turkish Sanjak bey?s office room differed from a Hungarian castellan?s room or what kind of weapons they battled during the past centuries.

Within the restored castle, downstairs there are the dungeon (open to the public out of Castle Theatre?s season), the chapel, the tavern and the ancillary rooms such as a dispensary, a bake-house, a smithy and a pottery. Upstairs there are various suits (of the lord and of the lady), the halberdier hall, the Sanjak bey?s reception room, the armoury and the knights? hall.

The castle gives several possibilities to arrange events: the chapel consecrated again lends itself to performing christening and wedding ceremonies, while the knights? hall to organizing receptions and conferences. The Castrum Castle Tavern can complete them, and it is also suitable hold independent programmes.

The museum-pedagogic classes provide special experience for children, on which they can get acquainted with not only the castle?s history and memories, but for them also an opportunity presents itself to make various articles.

 ?In a new atmosphere?

Owing to the project entitled ?Rehabilitation of Gyula?s historical inner-town? the Kossuth square, the town?s ?receiving? gate was brought into use in September of 2006. Since then the local population and our visitors have taken possession this square, which is really likeable and liveable with its vegetation, nice street furniture and landscaped environment. The individual statue to be found here is the ?Anamorphosis? that represents Albrecht Dürer?s work entitled ?Adam and Eva?. The disordered image on a horizontal surface is mirrored as an enjoyable normal image in the inoxidizable polished metal mirror of an inverse truncated cone form. On the occasion of the project entitled ?Tourists? purpose rehabilitation of Gyula?s inner-town?, the heart of the town was also restored. Due to new street and square pavements, fountains, garden seats and street lamps the inner-town has become remarkably attractive. The World Clock is a fresh dash of colour of our spa town, which was made through a non-series designing. From the emerald green glass ball of 3.5 tons, all time zones of our globe can be read off.

In addition, Gyula has grown richer with further developments having made our spa town more attractive for the visitors. By the side of the Fehér (White) Körös River a landing stage and port was constructed, which ? through Gyula?s geographical position ? may be the starting point and the terminus of water tours leading across the river and connecting the settlements within both domestic and international ecotourism. Here a receiving and information building stands at the persons? service arriving in the town on the Körös.

The Csigakert (Snail Garden) is one of the most significant green surfaces in our town. This particular natural park was involved to the developments having kept in view the territory?s values. The former open-air stage was demolished, and in its place, a flowery lawn was planted. The missing shrubs were supplemented and steps were taken to replace the valuable stand of trees. As well, a habitat was formed for water- and waterside plants.

For tourists a visitor centre was established in the Wenckheim-Almásy Mansion built in 18 Century and its park that is situated in Gyulavári quarter of Gyula town. In the first place, its aim is to exhibit the South Great Plain?s values in cultural, natural, environmental and economic fields

Gyula, the ?Town of Flowers?

In the course of beautifying the town, a big attention was paid to planting flowers and landscaping. As its result, Gyula town took 1 place in the ?Virágos Magyarországért? (Hungary in bloom) environment embellishing competition of 2007. Consequently, Gyula is entitled to represent Hungary in the European Competition for Towns and Villages in Bloom (Entente Florale Europe).

The Hundred-Year-Old Confectionery: The second confectionery of earliest foundation and function in Hungary works on the ground floor of the storied town-house being the most valuable in the South Great Plain by survey of monuments. This is a ?telltale? witness of Gyula town?s history. It was opened in 1840 herewith contributing notably to the upswing of the town?s societal life. Its saloons are imbued with the feel of reform period still today. The founder of the confectioner?s workshop furnished with original utensils of use ? functioning as a confectioner?s workshop museum ? was András Salis confectioner master. Here various kinds of candies, ice creams, parfaits, tee biscuits, leavened dough and short pastries were prepared and the remaining tin-moulds have kept the fashion of the ice cream- and parfait compositions.

The present offer of the Hundred-Year-Old Confectionery is also the result of perfect material and high level professional grounding: in addition to confectioneries, cakes and parfaits there are handicraft bonbons that can be made with nougat or stuffed, trüffels, specialties containing fruits mellowed in spirits, bonbons with brittle prepared as Hungarian specialty as well as bonbons containing wafer and marzipan.

Active tourism

However, neither visitors being more attracted by the undisturbed beauty of nature or by sports and active recreation instead of the milling of festivals are without amusement in Gyula and its surroundings. Some kilometres far from Gyula, the Farm Museum familiarizes the visitors not only with the onetime personal belongings of the inhabitants of Great Plain, but it brings out a complete offer of equestrian programmes. Gallery forests, waters and dikes of the near Körös Rivers, woods and lakes of the surroundings afford possibilities of mystifying quantity for hikers, anglers, huntsmen, cyclists and water-hikers. Fishes in the Körös Rivers represent a great attractive force for open-water anglers, while persons preferring calmer waters can indulge in their hobby in the lakes and ponds of the area. Bicycle tours on the rivers? dikes offer at once a sporting activity and restful contemplation of nature. Forests around Gyula are popular also in the circle of huntsmen, since this area is famous for its preserves of fallow deer and for its winged games. There are also innumerable sporting facilities in the town, and neither the fans of special sports remain without programmes, since Gyula is for instance one of the domestic strongholds of track racing speedway or aero-modelling in Hungary.

Szanazug and Városerd? await the fanciers of strand beach, where they can take a swim in Körös Rivers having the cleanest water in Hungary.

Excursions in the neighbourhood of Gyula

Városerd? (7 km): This is a recreation area and strand beach along the left bank of Fekete (Black) Körös River, 7 km far from Gyula towards Sarkad. On the sand-beach of the river, there is a marked bathing-place.

Farmstead Museum (11 km): The museum showing the life and production culture of peasants from the first part of 20 Century is located about 11 km far from Gyula towards Kétegyháza. In 1979, it was taken under protection. Riding possibilities and various equestrian programmes are available for tourist visiting here.

Doboz-Szanazug (15 km): This is the oldest community of Békés County, ancient Hungarian village (1075). Szanazug lies four kilometres far from the centre ? at the junction of Fehér- and Fekete-Körös Rivers ? on the riverside of Kett?s-Körös. Here 300 holiday houses, a youth camp and campsite sleeping more than 250 and a strand beach stand at the holidaymakers? service.

Szabadkígyós (15 km): The plain (puszta) and forestland abounding in natural values, surrounding the village is rich in bird and floral rarities. Its most important place of interest is the Wenckheim Mansion built in Eclectic style between 1875-79 according to Miklós Ybl?s plans. In the English and French parks of the 25-hectare nature conservation area enclosing the mansion there are many extraordinary tree-species.

Vészt?-Mágor (40 km): From a tourist point of view, the Historical Memorial Place in Vészt?-Mágor is of outstanding importance. Here two special extended mounds of 8-10 m height stand beside each other on a nature conservation area encompassed with the capricious meandering of the one-time bed of Sebes-Körös River.

Mez?hegyes (60 km): Emperor Joseph II founded the stud farm of Mez?hegyes in 1784. Its almost 60 buildings are now protected, agro-historical memorials. Here is the oldest roofed riding-hall of the country, next to it stables, corrals and horse-courses. All year equestrian-programmes, replanted English park and sport fishing possibilities provide pleasant recreation for the visitors.

Nagyszalonta (Salonta) (45 km): From Gyula towards Sarkad, this is the first settlement after the border crossing of Méhkerék. Its stronghold was built in 1636, but only the Csonkatorony (mangled tower) has remained from it, where the Arany János Memorial Museum is now. Beside its Calvinist church stands a Kossuth statue. The places of interest are marked with memorial tablets, such as ones indicating the place of János Arany?s house of birth or the native houses of Lajos Zilahy and István Sinka.

Nagyvárad (Oradea) (80 km): The seat of Bihor County is about 33 km far from Salonta. Its stronghold was built in 12 Century that was rebuilt at the end of 1500s. It is visitable, although it is in a rather ruined condition. The Hungarian Roman-Catholic Episcopal (Baroque) Palace, the prebend row built in Baroque style, the Black Eagle Palace are well worth seeing. Its State Theatre was named originally after Ede Szigligeti, and the first season as Oradea State Theatre was launched in 1948. At the turn of 20 Century, the city fulfilled a rather important role with its vivid middle-class life and culture, of which a number of palaces reminds us (Apollo Palace, Stern Palace, Palace of Finance, Palace of Justice, and Bishopric Greek-Catholic Palace). Endre Ady had a strong link with the city, from whom ?Pece-parti Párizs? (Pece-bank Paris) name of Oradea has derived.

Arad (80 km): Arad is situated in the western part of Romania, at the crossing of significant national and international roads. The ?Mure?-side city? is the western entrance gate of the country, where tourists get into contact first with the cultural-historic values of Romania. The Mure? (Maros) River crosses it in east-west direction. Arad municipium has a rich cultural-historic heritage. It is a veritable open-air museum of architectural styles, national monuments and historic memorials from the 18, 19 and 20 centuries. Arad Fortress is one of the most significant historical monuments in the western part of the country.
